Youth Leadership Training through Outdoor Experiential Education
Volunteer FAQ's

  • I enjoy the outdoors and working with youth but have never been backpacking. Does this make sense for me?
  • Many adults with little or no outdoor experience have significant skills and life experience. When augmented by JUMP’s training, they reveal themselves as excellent outdoor leaders.
  • What type of trips would I lead? What are the physical demands?
  • Introductory 3 day Outdoor Leadership Training trips involve day hikes and sleeping indoors in bunks at Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) staffed facilities with indoor plumbing. Meals are prepared and served family style by AMC staff. This includes pack lunches. Hikes are generally 6 miles or less with packs weighing 25-35 lbs. Consult your Doctor regarding your health and ability to participate.
  • What are the requirements and what type of training will I receive? What is the cost?
  • In addition to a CORI check, a valid driver’s license, and training in the basic policies required when working with youth, a certification in CPR and Wilderness First Aid are the minimum requirements for serving as a co-leader for Introductory Outdoor Leadership Training. Adult leaders must be over 21 years of age. JUMP is responsible for the cost and, in return, asks that trainees volunteer to co-lead two trips in two years.
  • What is my time obligation for training?
  • The training described above is two full days, can be done locally, and is normally scheduled on a weekend.
  • Will I be the only adult leader on a trip? What about liability?
  • Trips are conducted with two adult leaders. For your first trip with youth, you would be paired with an individual that has previous experience with youth and has successfully completed the AMC Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) five day Outdoor Leadership Training program. As a trained volunteer staff member of JUMP, you would be covered by our liability insurance for all JUMP sanctioned trips and activities.
  • I have a full time job. Will I need time off from work?
  • Depending on trip duration and timing, you may need time off from work. While these arrangements are between you and your employer, JUMP will submit a letter on your behalf explaining our mission and your generous donation of time and effort. Many employers are supportive of this type of activity and happy to get some good public relations for having their employees involved in giving back to the community.
  • What if I have a chronic disease or disability?
  • You and your doctor are the gatekeepers regarding your decision to participate. JUMP works to be inclusive regarding the abilities and disabilities of the youth we serve and the same is true for our trip leaders. JUMP will see to it that you are trained and supported in a manner that permits you to keep the group safe and have fun.
